The Book of Belief and Disbelief

Chapter 27
Essence of belief and conviction

653. 3. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) said that Haris bin Malik bin Nouman Ansari came to Prophet Muhammad (p).
Prophet Muhammad (p): O Haris, in what condition do I see you?
Haris: O Prophet Muhammad (p), I am a believer in absolute truth and my conviction is perfect and complete.
The Prophet (p): Everything has a basic reality. What is the reality of this statement of yours?
Haris: O Prophet of God (p) the matter which has kept me sad and I have spent sleepless nights and remained thirsty in hot seasons is the fear of hereafter, as though the throne of God (Arsh) is before my eyes and I feel that this is the hour of reckoning for me. I also imagine people entering paradise and (at the same time) I hear the moaning and groaning and weeping and wailing of the people of hell.
The Prophet (p), pointing towards Haris, addressed the other people:
This is the believer whose heart has been enlightened by God. He has seen the evidence of the (existence of God) in the phenomenon of the Universe and has remained steadfast.
Haris: O Prophet of God (p), do pray to God to bestow on me the status of a martyr.
The Prophet (p) prayed for him: O God! Bestow the honour of martyrdom on Haris.
After a few days, Prophet Muhammad (p) drafted Haris to an army which was sent to fight in the way of God. After killing several enemies of God, Haris attained the honour of martyrdom.(B5,C27,T3)
