Book 5:
The Book of Belief and Disbelief

Chapter 29
Excellence of character

659. 1. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): There are ten meritorious elements of good character. Adhere to them strictly if possible. These elements may be inherent in the father and not in the son. They may even be inherent in the son and not in the father. Also, sometimes they are present in the slaves and not in free men.
He was requested to name those elements.
The Imam (p): They are:
a. Righteousness,
b. Chivalry,
c. Truthfulness,
d. Restoration of trusts to their rightful owners,
e. Maintaining the bonds of loyalty,
f. Kindness and friendship,
g. Hospitality to a beggar,
h. To reciprocate a favour,
i. To provide refuge to a fellow-traveller, and
j. To provide refuge to the neighbour.
The most important of all is modesty.(B5,C29,T1)

660. 5. Imam Ali (p): Belief is supported by four pillars:
a. To remain content with the will of God,
b. Reliance on God,
c. To leave your affairs to the will of God, and
d. To obey the orders of God.(B5,C29,T5)

661. 7. Prophet Muhammad (p): Do you want me to tell you who the best among you is?
People: Certainly, O Prophet Muhammad (p).
The Prophet (p): The best among you is the one who is God-fearing, virtuous, and generous, guards his tongue and genitals against forbidden acts, looks after his parents and his dependants, and does not look to others for his livelihood.(B5,C29,T7)
