Book 5:
The Book of Belief and Disbelief

Chapter 33
Fear and hope

676. 2. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) advised Ishaq, a believer: O Ishaq! Fear God as though He is seeing you, although you do not see Him but (without doubt) He sees you. If you think that He is not seeing you then you are an infidel and if you commit a sin inspite of the realisation that God is seeing you, then you have underrated Him most among those who are able to see.(B5,C33,T2)

677. 3. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): One who fears God, He will make everything fear him, and one who does not fear God, and God will make him afraid of everything.(B5,C33,T3)

678. 4. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): One who realises the existence of God, is essentially afraid of Him and one who is afraid of God loses interest in this material world.679. 5. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): Some people commit sins with the hope that they will be forgiven and they remain in this delusion till they die. These people are victims of wishful thinking and are liars. They are not optimists. One who craves for something strives to get it and one who is afraid of anything keeps away from it.(B5,C33,T4)

679. 5. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): Some people commit sins with the hope that they will be forgiven and they remain in this delusion till they die. These people are victims of wishful thinking and are liars. They are not optimists. One who craves for something strives to get it and one who is afraid of anything keeps away from it.(B5,C33,T5)
680. 6. A person said to Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): There are some people among your devotees who, when they are reprimanded and rebuked for their sins, say that they hope to be forgiven.
The Imam (p): They are liars. They are not our devotees. They are victims of lust. One, who hopes for something, works hard to get it, and one who is afraid of anything, keeps away from it.(B5,C33,T6)
681. 7. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): One form of worship is the fear of God. God in His Book says that: … Those of His servants only who are possessed of knowledge fear God … (Q, 35:28). He also says: … So fear not the people and fear Me … (Q, 5:44). And God says: … And whoever fears God, God provides a way out for him … (Q, 65:2).
The Imam (p) also said that those who are afraid of God and are righteous, do not care for vanity and fame.(B5,C33,T7)

682. 9. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) quoted Prophet Muhammad (p):
O people! You have manifestations and proofs (of the glory and existence of God) and you have a (fixed) destination. Therefore, keep that destination in view. Remember that a believer works under two vital conditions. The span of life which has already slipped into the past, he does not know what God has destined for him. And the span of life which he has to live, he does not know what God will ordain for his future. Every believer, therefore, should work for the good of his soul. He should earn the blessings for the Hereafter in this material world, during his youth before he becomes old and during his physical life before he dies. By the one who has the life of Prophet Muhammad (p) in His Power, no excuse will be considered after this life is over. After this world, there is nothing except hell and paradise.(B5,C33,T9)

683. 11. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): A believer cannot be a real believer unless and until he has hopes and fears, and feels that this condition cannot be achieved unless he acts according to what he hopes and what he is afraid of.(B5,C33,T11)

684. 13. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) quoted his father Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (p): There is no believer who does not have two lights in his heart, the light of fear and the light of hope. If both are weighed, neither will outweigh the other.(B5,C33,T13)
