Chapter 48
Thanksgivings

748. 3. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): It is recorded in the Torah (Taurat) that if someone favours you, you should thank him and you should render favour to anyone who thanks you. You will not be deprived of bounties if you thank them. If you become ungrateful, the bounties will be taken away from you. Thanksgiving attracts plentiful bounties and self-reliance.(B5,C48,T3)

749. 4. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (p): The reward of a healthy grateful person is the same as the reward of a patient sick person and the reward of a grateful charitable person is the same as that of the poor person who is patient (with his poverty).(B5,C48,T4)
750. 5. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) was requested to comment on the verse: And the bounty of thy Lord, proclaim and rehearse (Q, 93:11).
The Imam (p): Proclaim the praise of the Glorious, One (God) who favoured you and showered His bounties on you and speak about this religion (Islam) and whatever has been bestowed on you through it.(B5,C48,T5)

751. 7. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): Nothing can harm you if you are clothed with three things:
a. Supplication in distress,
b. Sincere apology for sins, and
c. Thanksgivings for divine bounties.(B5,C48,T7)

752. 8. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): One who has been given the virtue of thanksgiving has also been given an abundance of bounties. God says: … If you are grateful, I will give you more … (Q, 14:7).(B5,C48,T8)

753. 10. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): Thankfulness for bounties (bestowed by God) lies in refraining from forbidden acts and to say ‘All praise be to God, the Lord-Protector of the worlds’ (Alhamdu Lillahi Rabbil Aalameen) is the climax of thanksgiving.(B5,C48,T10)
754. 11. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): The Paradise of God, the Almighty, the Glorious, is equivalent to thanksgiving for any bounty however great it may be.(B5,C48,T11)

755. 12. Abu Baseer asked Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): Is there a limit to thanksgiving?
The Imam (p): Yes.
Abu Baseer requested him to elaborate:
The Imam (p): Praise God for every bounty or blessing bestowed on you and on your near and dear one even if you have paid Zakat etc., out of it. This is the kind of thanksgiving mentioned in the verse: … Glory be to Him Who made this subservient to us and we were not able to do it … (Q, 43:13).(B5,C48,T12)

756. 13. Imam Ali ar-Reza (p): One, who praises God, thanks God and praise is better than bounty.(B5,C48,T13)

757. 14. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): When God bestows on any of His believers any bounty, great or small and he says ‘All praise be to God’, fulfils his duty as regards thanksgiving.(B5,C48,T14)

758. 18. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) once came out of a mosque and found his horse was missing.
The Imam (p): If I get it back I will go to the highest limit of thanking God.
After a while when he got his horse back Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) said: All praise be to God (Alhamdu Lillah).
Someone asked: You said you would go to the highest limit of thanksgiving.
The Imam (p): Did you not hear me? I said ‘All praise be to God’ (Alhamdu Lillah).(B5,C48,T18)

759. 19. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): Whenever Prophet Muhammad (p) was happy about something, he used to say ‘All praise be to God on this blessing’ and when he was sad about something he used to say ‘Praise be to God in all circumstances’.(B5,C48,T19)
760. 22. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): When you see someone suffering from a disease, say ‘O God, neither I ridicule this ailing person nor am I proud of my health. I praise God for the bounties He has bestowed on me’.(B5,C48,T22)

761. 23. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) quoted Prophet Muhammad (p): When you see people in trouble, praise God (for keeping you away from that trouble) in a manner that they do not hear you. If they hear you, it will hurt them.(B5,C48,T23)
762. 24. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) said that once Prophet Muhammad (p) was travelling. Abruptly he stopped, dismounted from his camel and prostrated five times on the ground. When he was about to ride the camel again people asked him about this action.
People: O Prophet of God (p), today you have done something which you had never done before.
The Prophet (p): Yes. Gabriel (Jibrael) (p) came to me and gave me some glad tidings. I thank God for every glad tiding.(B5,C48,T24)

763. 26. Hisham ibn Ahmer said that while he was travelling to Medina with Imam Musa al-Kazim (p), the Imam (p) dismounted suddenly and went into a lengthy prostration.
Hisham asked respectfully: Why did you remain in prostration for a long time?
The Imam (p): I recollected a bounty of God and I wanted to thank God for it.(B5,C48,T26)

764. 27. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) said that God ordered Prophet Moses (Musa) (p) to thank Him as He deserved to be thanked.
Prophet Moses (p): O God, how can I thank You; as You deserve to be thanked because You deserve thanks on every bounty and Your bounties are limitless (continuous).
God: When you have realised that every bounty is from Me, you have thanked Me as I deserve to be thanked.(B5,C48,T27)
