Chapter 53
Pardon and forgiveness

784. 3. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p): Benevolence in this world and the hereafter consists of three things:
a. Be kind to him who severs social relations with you,
b. Forgive the person who oppresses you, and
c. If someone treats you with arrogance, treat him with forbearance.(B5,C53,T3)

785. 4. Imam Zainul Abideen (p) said that on the Day of Judgement God will gather all the people of the past, present and future on a vast landscape and an announcer will call out, “Where are the eminent people?” A number of people, on hearing this voice will raise their heads.
Angels: What are your outstanding qualifications?
People: We established relationships of mutual sympathy with those who had broken them, and we have been generous to those who usurped our rights, and we forgave those who oppressed us.
Angels: Your claim is justified. You may enter the paradise.(B5,C53,T4)

786. 5. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (p) quoted Prophet Muhammad (p): Make it a duty to forgive others. This enhances the prestige of the believer. If you forgive others, God will bestow special honours on you.(B5,C53,T5)

787. 8. Imam Musa al-Kazim (p): When two armies are fighting each other, those who have a forgiving nature will come out victorious.(B5,C53,T8)
788. 10. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (p): Three qualities earn honour and prestige for Muslims:
a. To establish bonds of mutual sympathy with those who have broken them,
b. To be generous with those who have wronged them, and
c. To forgive their oppressors.(B5,C53,T10)
